The Car Market provides a safe, undercover environment for buyers and sellers to meet. It’s a place where buyers can view a number of vehicles in one place and get free advice from the Car Market staff. Buying in the Car Market is completely free of charge. All prices are negotiated between the buyer and seller.

All vehicles for sale in the Car Market must display a FORM 18. (Car Market Register Notice) which will provide basic information including registration details and odometer readings. They must also display a currant NSW Roadworthy Inspection Report, otherwise known as a Pink Slip or White Slip. Roadworthy reports will last for 42 days from the date of completion.

***Road worthy does not necessarily equate to reliability***

PINK SLIP = PASS

WHITE SLIP = FAIL

A Pink Slip means that at the time of inspection the vehicle is “Roadworthy.” This would allow you to add NSW Rego.

A White Slip means that at the time of inspection the vehicle has FAILED its roadworthy inspection and needs specific work before it can be passed. The reasons for a failed roadworthy are listed at the bottom of the white slip.

TIPS

REGISTRATION TRANSFER.

Not all states allow you to transfer ownership by mail. Transfer of registration costs varies from state to state as do the requirements. Make sure that your vehicle has valid registration, as it is an offence to drive an unregistered vehicle.  If you are stopped without registration the police officer can remove your plates and have the vehicle impounded. There is no “grace period” with respect to expired registration.

BEFORE YOU BUY.

Before you buy any vehicle you should first…

Test Drive

If the seller is not prepared to let you test-drive the vehicle then you have to ask yourself the question ”Why?” In most circumstances this is because the vehicle will have some sort of mechanical problem that may prevent you from travelling around Australia. A test drive will also give you a chance to bond with the vehicle. Ask your self the question “Can I see my self living and driving this vehicle for my time in Australia.” “How easy is it going to be to sell at the end of my trip?” “Does it feel safe? Is it going to cost me money in repairs while I travel?”

Pre-Purchase Inspection

If the vehicle passes a test-drive then the next step before buying is to get a pre-purchase inspection with a qualified mechanic. This will give you a better idea of how the vehicle is going to perform while your travelling. Even if the interior and exterior look good, mechanically it may need a lot of work. A pre-purchase inspection will cost around $120. It’s a small investment that could save you thousands of dollars.

THINK OF SELLING NOW.

Buying a vehicle comes down to a few key factors that determine price. Age, Condition, Kilometres and most importantly Registration (Rego.) Registration can be expensive but is the most complicated part of buying any vehicle in Australia. Aim to have at least 3 months registration remaining when you sell your vehicle. This will give you an advantage over your competitors. It will allow the new owner to travel before adding registration.

Parking your vehicle in the market and hoping for the best doesn’t always work. Advertise your car on www.cars4backpackers.com.au before you start your travels and try to build some interest before you finish your trip. Making posters and advertising in hostels also works really well.
